Speaker 1: Ambassador David Reimer โ€“ United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Mauritius

Topic: Opening remarks

Bio:

David Reimer was sworn in as United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Seychelles on December 13, 2017. Formerly, he was the Director of the State Departmentโ€™s Office of West African Affairs. Before that, he was Deputy Chief of Mission, and later, Chargรฉ d โ€˜Affaires, at the U.S. Embassy in Mauritania. Ambassador Reimerโ€™s other overseas postings include Iraq; Switzerland; Haiti; Italy; Germany; and Belize. In Washington, Ambassador Reimer has worked in the Africa Bureau, Humanย Resources Bureau, and Economic Bureau. Ambassador Reimer is an Economic Officer. Prior to joining the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer, he worked as an International Affairs Specialist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

YUVA Staff Empowered on Critical Thinking at African Leadership University

On Wednesday, 4 December 2019, a workshop was organised at the African Leadership Campus on Critical Thinking, by the company Open to Possibilities, to empower 10 members of YUVA.

Open to Possibilities is a Canadian based firm that works with Businesses, Organisations and Business Leaders to help them identify their problems and facilitate proactive filled change so that they can focus on the growth of the organisation. They provide many services, such as facilitation, workshops, coaching and speaking. Ms Margo Purcell of Open to Possibilities was the facilitator for the workshop and she focused mainly on the framework that the members could equip themselves with to incorporate critical thinking in any task, project or venture they plan to engage in.

25 November 2019: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.

In general terms, it manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing:

  • intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);
  • sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber-harassment);
  • human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation);
  • female genital mutilation; and
  • child marriage.

19 November: World Toilet Day 2019 – Leaving No One Behind

World Toilet Day, celebrated on 19th November every year, is about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which promises sanitation for all by 2030.

Established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001, World Toilet Day was made an official UN day in 2013. UN-Water leads a taskforce of international agencies to campaign around a common theme.
