On 29 March 2019, YUVA celebrated the World NGO Day 2019 with university students and NGO representatives on the campus of the University of Mauritius (UoM).
World NGO Day is a day for NGOs around the globe to share knowledge and experiences with one another. It aims to educate individuals worldwide on NGOs and their impact. The World NGO Day also provides an opportunity to honour and remember NGO founders, employees, volunteers, members and supporters.
With this aim in mind, members of the UoM Marketing Society came up with the 2nd edition of the World NGO Day, under the theme ‘Make a Difference’. They hoped that the lives of people would be changed through this event. A full day of activities was planned, including an NGO Fair, an exhibition and display on the theme of discrimination, a talent show and inspirational talks and performances.
YUVA made use of the platform provided to inform and share with participants, mainly UoM and MGI students, about the social vision and operations of YUVA. Through face-to-face interactions with UoM students, YUVA was able to provide insightful information about the activities it conducts on a daily basis, and also how these contribute to social impact and the importance of sustaining them.
Additionally, YUVA invited students to empower themselves in order to empower the society through getting involved in the programmes offered by the YUVA Academy, such as Leadership for Social Change and The Entrepreneurial Mindset, as well as internship and volunteering opportunities.
The NGO Fair was followed by a cultural show whereby students and representatives of NGOs showcased their talents while at the same time expressing their experiences through various art forms, including singing, dancing, sketches and slams.
This second edition of the World NGO Day allowed students to take notice of the different fields that NGOs operate in, in Mauritius. It allowed all participants to celebrate the good works that are being done by different NGOs operating against all forms of discrimination in the society. Moreover, the event commemorated the existence of NGOs and brought awareness to university students and other participants on how they can be more involved in the positive enhancement of society through the opportunities provided by NGOs in Mauritius.
