Christmas is celebrated worldwide regardless of religion and race. The world buzzes with excitement and tinkles with smiles and laughs for the Christmas season. One cannot go a day without hearing Christmas carols or seeing a Christmas tree when stepping out of the house. The streets are dyed in red, green, and white, and they sparkle with the glow of a thousand lights. It is a most joyous time for children who heavily anticipate their gifts from Santa. It is ridiculous how much joy Christmas can bring a person when they have the money to celebrate it.

A Christmas with money is a Christmas well spent. What about those who do not have the money to celebrate Christmas?

Parents who live from paycheck to paycheck and can barely bring food to their table, parents who were born into poverty and birthed their children into poverty, parents who have been dismissed from their job due to Covid-19 and orphan children who have no parents to buy them gifts, these parents and children, cannot afford Christmas, certainly not this bastardised version of Christmas nowadays which is filled with consumerism and commercialism and has long since deviated from its original purpose of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ among friends and family. Modern Christmas has become about acquiring gifts than spending time with friends and family.

Regardless of its deviating purpose, Christmas is supposed to be a day of joy. Still, children from low-income families are only left disappointed, maybe even bitter towards the celebrating world without the money to celebrate Christmas. In contrast, their parents are left guilty and miserable for failing their children. Christmas is a day for making happy memories, which leave a sense of nostalgia and, most importantly, the warmth of happiness when looked back on in the future. For those who have spent Christmas riddled with poverty, memories of Christmas bring nothing but misery and bitterness. Memories of swallowing back wishes for a new toy on Christmas because of the lack of money, memories of parents walking away from a shop window with empty promises to get their children their desired gifts later and memories of looking onto celebrating families with envy. Christmas memories differ significantly for those with money and those without. A Christmas is only merry when you have the money to celebrate it. Without money, Christmas is merely a disappointment.

The existence of people who uphold the true Christmas spirit is nothing short of a miracle. People who do not restrict the Christmas spirit of kindness and generosity to their household but instead extend it to those who need it are the ones who live Christmas. Christmas is meant to be shared with others. Be it by donating to NGOs for Christmas, by giving gifts to orphan children, by opening your home and Christmas dinner to those who cannot afford it, spreading kindness and love is how one lives Christmas.

As Taylor Caldwell, a famous British-born American novelist, once said, “This is the message of Christmas. We are never alone. Not when the night is coldest, the world seemingly indifferent.”
