Journalism Under Digital Siege: World Press Freedom Day 2022

World Press Freedom Day is annually celebrated worldwide on 3 May. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed it in December 1993.

The main objective of World Press Freedom Day, according to UNESCO, is to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom and to remind the governments of all nations that their responsibility is to respect the right to freedom of expression. There is also a special prize awarded during this day. People pay tribute and acknowledge the media professionals who risked their lives while pursuing a story.

Addressing Gender Inequality in Africa Post-COVID-19

Gender Inequality has many intersections. Most societal structures, from the government to families, are patriarchal. At the core of any society are the economy and jobs. Roles and work assigned to men perpetuate the belief that men can only do specific jobs. This is not sustainable.

The pandemic worsened employment levels across all genders, disproportionately so for women. This article looks at how Kenya and Ghana address gender disparities and challenge workplace stereotypes.

Les femmes sont fortes, aucun doute là-dessus. Elles portent souvent le poids du monde sur leur épaule et elles le font avec honneur et ténacité. Elles sont nombreuses à vivre dans un monde opprimé par les conceptions qu’ont la société sur elle.

A l’Ile Maurice, les femmes subissent tous les jours des injustices tel que la pauvreté, le harcèlement sexuel, la discrimination et bien plus encore. Certaines les dénoncent, mais d’autres se sentent oppressées et n’osent pas s’exprimer.

Tackling the Buzz with Safety & Care: World Malaria Day 2022

World Malaria Day is commemorated annually on the 25th of April to call world attention to the steps taken to finally end Malaria and promote action to minimise suffering and mortality. Although Malaria is not infectious, anyone can catch it. The symptoms of this disease include sweats, headache, chills, fever, body ache, vomiting, and nausea.

Malaria is one of the deadliest viruses transferred by mosquitoes. Nearly half of the world’s population is in danger because of Malaria, especially people of underdeveloped countries. Due to global action and containment of the disease, 1.5 billion cases and 7.6 million fatalities have been prevented in the last two decades.

Le Statut de la Femme dans la Société Mauricienne

Le statut de la femme était, auparavant, comparable à celui d’un enfant. Le stéréotype féminin montre que la place des femmes est à la maison, à s’occuper des tâches ménagères, des enfants et de leur époux. Les droits des femmes étaient limités et très peu d’entre elles avaient une place, dite valorisante, dans la société.

C’est souvent uniquement lors de la journée de la femme, célébrée le 8 mars, qu’on l’honore. Cependant, des progrès ont été faits et le statut de la femme est bien plus haut placé. Elle est même considérée comme l’égal de l’homme. Mais ce n’est pas toujours le cas et plus particulièrement dans la société patriarcale qu’est l’Ile Maurice.

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate women’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements. On the day this year, an anonymous Twitter ‘bot’ emerged; @PayGapApp.

The account called out the salary discrimination between men and women from leading companies in the United Kingdom. It not only pointed out the “discrepancies”, but it also posted verified data of the gaps. In this article, we looked at how this disparity is closing and not in Africa through various intersecting factors.

The LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual) communities have made profound workplace rights progress. This is very visible in Western countries.

Huge corporations pledged support for LGBTQIA+ communities against the anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation proposed in the United States. In Africa, the challenges are the same but in an entirely different context. This article looks at the specific difficulties queer communities face daily.

Rights of LGBQTIA+ Community in Africa, Explained

The rights of the LGBQTIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) community in Africa are minimal. In 2015 the International Gay and Lesbian Association reported that homosexuality was outlawed in 30+ African countries.

In the past ten years, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Lesotho and the Republic of Seychelles have legalised same-sex relationships. We took a closer look at the challenges LGBQTIA folk face in African countries.
