10 Best Places to Visit in India as a Tourist

India is a vast country rich in culture, traditions, and colours. It is a destination loved for its history and culture and where you can learn a lot. This article lists the 10 best places in India as a tourist.

In India, there are many beautiful places to see, such as the Taj Mahal, the beaches, the forests, the monuments, the temples, the rivers, the wilderness, and the lively cities. There is something for everyone.

1. Thar Desert

The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is partly in Rajasthan. It is the most popular tourist destination in the northwestern Indian subcontinent. This desert covering more than 74,000 square feet, is India’s only desert. The view is mind-blowing, with the sky and dunes. The sky is also beautiful at night. One can explore the desert by jeep safari, which some would say is much more comfortable, but camel rides also provide a more beautiful experience when exploring the desert. Either way, the scenic view is still outstanding.

2. Taj Mahal

Agra is full of beautiful places to explore, like the city of Uttar Pradesh, where there are monuments worth seeing, but probably the most admired of all is the Taj Mahal. This white marble mausoleum, built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his late wife between 1632 and 1648, is impressive. No wonder it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Taj Mahal is so well known that one thinks of it directly when thinking of the most beautiful things in India. It is a pleasure to visit for lovers of history and architecture. Whether at sunrise or sunset, it is a magnificent sight.

3. New Delhi

It would be unthinkable not to visit India and not go through the country’s capital, New Delhi. This city has a lot to offer its visitors, as there are many exciting sites to see. It is not for nothing that these are some of the most popular cities visited by tourists. It is possible to visit shopping malls, planetariums, and restaurants. You can also go to the oldest market in the town, Chandni Chowk. But, of course, the monuments and historical sites are also beautiful to see. Especially the Red Fort found in old Delhi. It is a lovely and famous historical fortification which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

4. Goa Beaches

India is known for its impressive temples, beautiful monuments, and beaches. The beaches in India are well worth a visit. The beaches of Goa are among the most popular holiday destinations. With its golden beaches and raging waves, it’s a stunning sight. Candolim Beach, Palolem Beach, Baga Beach, and more are the most popular. All these beaches will offer a great experience and beautiful views while walking along the coast. The beaches in Goa are beautiful, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. It is especially ideal for enjoying the sun and sea.

5. Ajanta and Ellora Caves

One place worth visiting is the Ajanta and Ellora Caves in Maharashtra. These caves have both been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The caves are indeed covered with intricate carvings dating back to 1500 years. This site is a feast for the eyes, and the fact that it is so old is impressive, given its beauty. For history lovers, it is a wonder. The Ajanta Caves are the older of the two, with approximately 30 Buddhist cave monuments cut into the rock. The Ellora Caves, located 100 kilometres southwest, have nearly three dozen Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu carvings. Many wonders and sculptures are also to be seen inside the caves.

6. Mumbai

Mumbai is also a must-see place, so you won’t regret visiting.  Mumbai is a bustling coastal city home to ultra-rich entrepreneurs and even Bollywood’s hottest actors. It is truly a place to enjoy. In this wealthy city, tourists are never far from a five-star hotel or a gourmet restaurant. Visit the Thieves Market or Churchgate Station to discover a more local side of Mumbai. In any case, if you like a city that is lively and bustling, Mumbai is a good destination.

7. Kerala

Far from the busy and noisy cities, one can also visit Kerala, which is quieter. Kerala lies in the southwestern coastal state of India and is a beautiful place known for its culture, traditions and temples.  One activity is to cruise along the tranquil backwaters on a traditional thatched-top houseboat in Alleppey. Enjoy a peaceful drift along the rivers while admiring the palms, the view, and the wilderness. It’s a different atmosphere where you can breathe in the fresh air and relax a bit more while enjoying your visit.

8. Kodagu

Kodagu is a very rustic and pretty place. It is an ideal place for those who love nature and green landscapes. It is possible to visit the coffee and spice plantations and see how some foods are produced. The surrounding area is also perfect for trekking, like in the Western Ghats, but you can also visit the beautiful Abbey Falls. Kerala has a different lifestyle from the big cities, and that’s why it’s such an attractive place to be.

9. Amritsar

Amritsar, also known as the “Jewel of Punjab,” is a visual delight. Amritsar is well-known for its magnificent Golden Temple. The golden structure, one of the holiest places in the world for Sikhs, is a sight to behold, glistening in the sunlight and reflected in the large pool surrounding it. Tourists frequently visit the Golden Temple to pay their respects. Amritsar’s allure never ceases to amaze, as it is rich in history and spirituality. There are numerous places to visit, including the Partition Museum and the Mata Lal Devi Mandir. Furthermore, visiting Amritsar provides an excellent opportunity to try some Punjabi cuisine.

10. Varanasi

Varanasi, located on the banks of the Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh, is one of the world’s oldest living cities. It is situated in northern India and is among the most sacred places. Varanasi is also known for some of the country’s most revered temples and Ghats, and it attracts devotees and tourists from all over the world. Spiritual activities are held along the holy Ganges River. Tourists can also go on sunrise boat rides, release floral blessings that float down the river and watch Hindu chanting ceremonies from the steep ghats. This place offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
