In the world of technology and innovation, one young talent emerges: Abhay Peertun. Abhay, a Port Louis, Mauritius resident, is an 18-year-old high school student enrolled at John Kennedy College.

What distinguishes him from his peers is his strong passion for technology. This passion has driven him on a remarkable journey, from a curious kid disassembling electronic devices to a rising talent in the world of robotics. In this article, we dive into Abhay’s inspiring voyage, exploring the roots of his fascination with technology and his path toward FIRST Global Challenge 2023.

“I have always been captivated by the technologies and the revolutionary advancements we have witnessed over time,” shared Abhay. “As a child, I would disassemble any expired electronic devices I came across; purely for the joy of satisfying my curiosity,” he added.

“My passion for robotics is deeply rooted in my love for Computer Studies. I constantly question the functionality of things around us and their structures, and Computer Studies always seems to provide answers. As a quick learner, I am expanding my programming knowledge, which passionately engages me, alongside my passion for disassembling electronic devices,” said Abhay enthusiastically.

“These factors have led me to be selected by YUVA to be part of the esteemed Team Mauritius and participate in FIRST Global 2023, which makes me very proud,” said Abhay. “I am continuously learning new things from my teammates and, especially, our mentors who have played a crucial role in guiding us on this incredible journey,” he added.

FIRST Global 2023 is an international robotics competition that brings together the brightest high-school students in the field of robotics from all over the world, aiming to empower them through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

The competition fosters cross-cultural communication, cooperation, and problem-solving skills, empowering students to collectively tackle global challenges and come up with innovative solutions.

Reflecting on his experiences with Team Mauritius and their journey, Abhay shared, “My time around Team Mauritius, along with the other participants, was challenging and very complicated to adapt to. Thanks to the guidance of our mentors, I succeeded in integrating and establishing a strong connection with the team. While working with them, I gained a deeper understanding of how they work, quickly adapting to their approach and finding satisfaction in working together. This process played a pivotal role in fostering a solid bond among all team members, with this bond strengthening further with each challenge faced, compelling us to collaborate and find solutions.”

Expanding on their collective goals for the competition, Abhay added, “Firstly, we seek to gain comprehensive insights into Robotics from the perspectives of the different countries participating in FIRST Global 2023. Additionally, we aspire to fortify our ties with other participants, which we believe will help us to achieve successful outcomes. Above all, we aim to enjoy while learning and bring pride and recognition to our Nation.”

When discussing his dreams and aspirations, he passionately said, “I aspire to study both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, with the expectation that the STEM education system will assist me in preparing and mastering these disciplines by developing the essential skills required to accomplish my life’s goals.”

In his closing remarks, Abhay imparted these words of encouragement to his peers, who eagerly await their own opportunities to participate in similar events: “A few words I would address to my peers who, I am certain, are fervently awaiting their opportunity to participate in such events, would be this: keep up the work you are doing. Do not give up, no matter how hard it gets or how harsh the challenges present to you. Invest your efforts and faith in discovering new solutions to any upcoming task. Work hard as a cohesive team, and you will undoubtedly experience the profound joy and fulfilment it can bring.”

We wish the very best of luck to Abhay and the entire team. May your hard work and dedication lead to great success in FIRST Global 2023 and beyond. Go Team Mauritius!ß
