Krishna Athal Appointed as Chairman of National Youth Council of Mauritius

Following the Parliamentary sessions held on the 18th of May 2012, the Cabinet has taken note of the reconstitution of the National Youth Council of Mauritius by appointing a new Chairperson.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Jawahar Lall (Krishna) Athal to the top position of Chairman of the Council.

Mr Athal, after thanking the Government of Mauritius for selecting him as Chairman, stated “The honour and challenge of bringing forward the destiny of our youth commission is a task that I have accepted with enthusiasm, and I would like to thank the Prime Minister, Dr The Honourable Navinchandra Ramgoolam, G.C.S.K, F.R.C.P and Minister of Youth & Sports, Honourable Satyaprakash Ritoo for their trust.”

Mr Athal said that his main goal is to reinforce and uphold the objectives of the Council. He proposes to emphasise on creating a responsible youth citizenship imbued with multidisciplinary skills that would contribute efficiently and effectively in all spheres of the development of Mauritius.

“I see great importance to look after NYC as an effective communication vehicle that would foster sustainable youth development through appropriate empowerment programmes, networking, good governance and advocacy. To attain its objectives, I will see to it that the National Youth Council examines and evaluates the contribution of our youth to the various sectors of development in the light of national needs and priorities, and also studies specific areas where the participation of youth should be invited or strengthened. I am looking forward to serving this national strategic institution.”

Mr Athal will succeed Mr Siddique Mohammad Doman, who has served as Chairman of the Board since 2006. He is the youngest Chairman ever appointed.

The Committee comprises of 9 members, reflecting the composition of the NYC Executive Board. It advises the Minister on the development and implementation of programmes to integrate youth in all sectors of national development. Besides, it also grants affiliation to National Youth Organisations and allocate grants to Regional Youth Councils.
