3 Factors Preventing Mauritians From Becoming Entrepreneurs: World Entrepreneurs Day

Today, we celebrate the World Entrepreneurship Day. Globally, entrepreneurship is holding stronger roots in the mindsets of people. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report 2020-21, in 32 out of 43 economies, more than half of the respondents intended to open a new business despite the pandemic.

The growth of entrepreneurship worldwide appears as a golden time for importing countries to try and turn the tables or become self-reliant. International Youth Day 2021: Why Most Mauritian Youths Are Plumping On Online Businesses

Today is observed as International Youth Day. Elaborating on the significance of the youth in determining the future of society, this article explores the entrepreneurial pursuits of young Mauritians. 

Every year, the International Youth Day is based on a theme. This year’s theme is “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”. I picked a specific aspect of them: how the youths work to sustain human and planetary health innovation. The UN’s website states, “Through youth education, engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurial solutions, this year’s International Youth Day aims to provide a platform for young people to continue the momentum from the ECOSOC Youth Forum in the lead up to the high-level Food Systems Summit.” Since the pandemic has hit the world, food systems and all economic and social aspects have faced slack.

Speaker 1: Ambassador David Reimer – United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Mauritius

Topic: Opening remarks

Bio:

David Reimer was sworn in as United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Seychelles on December 13, 2017. Formerly, he was the Director of the State Department’s Office of West African Affairs. Before that, he was Deputy Chief of Mission, and later, Chargé d ‘Affaires, at the U.S. Embassy in Mauritania. Ambassador Reimer’s other overseas postings include Iraq; Switzerland; Haiti; Italy; Germany; and Belize. In Washington, Ambassador Reimer has worked in the Africa Bureau, Human Resources Bureau, and Economic Bureau. Ambassador Reimer is an Economic Officer. Prior to joining the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer, he worked as an International Affairs Specialist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The cohort 5 of the Certificate in The Entrepreneurial Mindset programme started on Saturday, 6 July 2019. The YUVA Academy welcomed 16 aspiring entrepreneurs, including NGO representatives from various parts of the island. The Certificate in The Entrepreneurial Mindset programme is delivered by YUVA’s Programme Coordinator, Adiilah Mohorun.

Uncover the secrets of thinking like an entrepreneur to create value for stakeholders and society across a variety of business settings. What does it really mean to think entrepreneurially?
