Suicide is defined as taking one’s own life. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicidal behaviour involves activities and actions that involve terminating your own life.

There are almost 47,000 Americans who suicides themselves each year. 78% of the suicides were white males and were ranged between 45-55 years old. On an average day, there are approximately 129 people who commit suicide daily. Numerous reasons encourage people for suicidal thoughts. Youth Is Not The Future of the Country; Old People Are

We’ve been taught to always focus on the youth, and the future they hold so dearly in their hands. That they are the ones who will correct the injustices, which previous generations have set in motion over decades.

But let’s face it, Mauritius is getting old at a faster rate than ever before with no signs of slowing down any time soon. We’ve been watching for some time now how the older generation is increasing while the young generation is not, or at least at a much slower pace. It’s reported that between 1972 and 2015, the percentage of people over the age of 60 has increased from 5.9% to 14.8% (Le Mauricien, 2017).

Although families all over the world have transformed greatly over the past decades in terms of their structure and as a result of global trends and demographic changes, the United Nations still recognizes the family as the basic unit of society. The International Day of Families provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them. It has inspired a series of awareness-raising events, including national family days.
