It is 2021, 76 years since the term NGO became popular with the founding of the United Nations in 1945. Organisations that strive for the betterment of humanity have existed since the dawn of time, though the shape they take has constantly been evolving.

In the late 1970s in the UK, social entrepreneurship emerged as an alternative business model with the traditional profit motive and a social, environmental and governance focus. Our tiny nation is blessed with more than 300 active NGOs, yet not many social enterprises. Whether out of ignorance, lack of skills, complexity or sheer refusal to mix business with the social world, many NGOs do not alter their models, even though social enterprises tend to be more scalable and sustainable.

Speaker 1: Ambassador David Reimer – United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Mauritius

Topic: Opening remarks

Bio:

David Reimer was sworn in as United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Seychelles on December 13, 2017. Formerly, he was the Director of the State Department’s Office of West African Affairs. Before that, he was Deputy Chief of Mission, and later, Chargé d ‘Affaires, at the U.S. Embassy in Mauritania. Ambassador Reimer’s other overseas postings include Iraq; Switzerland; Haiti; Italy; Germany; and Belize. In Washington, Ambassador Reimer has worked in the Africa Bureau, Human Resources Bureau, and Economic Bureau. Ambassador Reimer is an Economic Officer. Prior to joining the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer, he worked as an International Affairs Specialist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The YUVA Annual Leadership & Entrepreneurship Summit (YALES) 2019 officially started on Friday, 06 December 2019, at the Caudan Arts Centre with 78 participants.

The topic of Day 3 was Leadership. Participants were mostly from the corporate sector, NGO sector, educators of secondary schools, fresh graduates from local universities and as well as university lecturers.
