On 30th January 2025, the air at Jeevan Dhara, Indira Nagar, Cotton Green, Mumbai, was filled with inspiration as YUVA India conducted a moving tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day. This event was more than just a session—it was a transformative experience that ignited young minds with the spirit of truth, non-violence, and self-discipline.

A Session to Remember

Guided by Ms Vanita from YUVA India, alongside Mr Vijay Powar and Ms Priti Balwadi from Jeevan Dhara, the session delved into the remarkable life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. The event was designed to not only educate but also to instil a deep sense of self-awareness and responsibility among the children.

Unfolding Gandhi’s Legacy Through Stories and Films

With eager eyes and keen attention, the children embarked on a journey through Gandhi’s life and values. Ms Vanita’s engaging narration brought alive key principles such as truth (Satya), non-violence (Ahimsa), self-reliance (Swadeshi), and cleanliness (Swachhata), connecting them with real-life applications.

To reinforce these lessons, the children watched four powerful documentary films:

The first film focused on Gandhi’s early years, covering his birth in Porbandar, Gujarat, his education in London, and his experiences in South Africa. It highlighted how his encounters with racial discrimination laid the foundation for his philosophy of Satyagraha, peaceful resistance against injustice.

The second film traced his role in India’s freedom struggle, from the Champaran Satyagraha to the Non-Cooperation Movement. A key highlight was the Dandi March of 1930, where Gandhi led thousands in defying the British-imposed salt tax, proving that simple, non-violent actions could challenge an empire.

The third documentary illustrated how Gandhi’s philosophy influenced global leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. It demonstrated how his ideology transcended national boundaries and shaped movements for equality and justice worldwide.

The final film depicted the last days of Gandhi’s life, including the communal tensions following India’s partition in 1947 and his tireless efforts to promote peace between Hindus and Muslims. It concluded with his assassination on 30th January 1948 and the lasting impact of his message.

More Than Just Learning – A Call to Action

The session also addressed an important everyday concern—hygiene and self-discipline. It was observed that many children lacked basic hygiene habits, and Ms Vanita took the opportunity to connect cleanliness with self-respect, a principle close to Gandhi’s heart.

The children were encouraged to take a hygiene pledge:

“We will maintain personal hygiene by taking a bath daily before coming to the centre and will uphold the values of cleanliness and self-discipline.”

They enthusiastically participated in the discussion, understanding that small, consistent actions could lead to a healthier and more respectful way of life.

Impact That Will Last a Lifetime

The session was not just about information; it was about transformation. As the children watched, listened, and reflected, their expressions mirrored their growing admiration for Gandhi’s ideals. They asked thoughtful questions, eager to understand how truth, non-violence, and discipline remain relevant today.

Many children shared their own reflections—some spoke about being more truthful in their daily interactions, while others expressed a desire to practice kindness and non-violence in their friendships.

Carrying Gandhi’s Light Forward

The event concluded with a powerful discussion on how each one of us can carry forward Gandhi’s message. The children were encouraged to:

  • Be honest in their words and actions
  • Show kindness to everyone, regardless of differences
  • Adopt sustainable habits, such as reducing waste and keeping their surroundings clean
  • Stand up against injustice in peaceful and respectful ways

YUVA India is committed to continuing such impactful sessions, ensuring that Gandhi’s timeless values remain embedded in the hearts and actions of the next generation.
