On 13th February 2024, YUVA India conducted an engaging and informative session on Healthy Eating Habits at Janvi Charitable Trust. The session aimed to educate children about the importance of nutrition, making healthier food choices, and understanding the impact of diet on overall well-being. A total of 20 children participated enthusiastically, learning through interactive discussions, animated videos, and activities.
Session Highlights
The session was facilitated by Ms. Vanita Salunke and Mr. Vijay Powar from YUVA India. Representing Janvi Charitable Trust were Mr. Ashley Pereira and the centre in-charge, both of whom actively participated in the session to support and encourage the children’s learning.
Ms. Vanita Salunke initiated the session with an energiser activity to make the children feel comfortable and engaged. This was followed by a recap of the previous session, which focused on Personal Hygiene. The revision helped the children recall essential hygiene practices, setting the stage for a discussion on healthy eating habits.
Engaging Learning Through Animated Videos
To make the session more interactive and visually engaging, the facilitators showed the children three animated videos related to healthy eating habits:
- Healthy Eating for Kids – Eat Healthy, Stay Healthy!: This video helped children understand the importance of eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains. It explained how different food groups contribute to physical and mental well-being.
- What is Junk Food? Why Should You Avoid It?: This video provided insights into the negative effects of junk food, including obesity, lack of nutrition, and the risk of lifestyle diseases. It encouraged children to make better food choices.
- The Power of Green Vegetables – Why Are They Important?: This video emphasised the nutritional value of green vegetables, highlighting their role in boosting immunity, improving digestion, and promoting overall growth and development.
Key Discussion Points from the Session
1. Understanding Healthy and Junk Food
One of the main aspects of the session was helping children distinguish between healthy food and junk food. The facilitators explained that healthy food includes fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein sources like lentils and nuts, which provide essential nutrients and energy. In contrast, junk food like chips, sugary drinks, and fast food contains excessive sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, leading to poor health outcomes.
The children participated in a lively discussion about their favourite foods and learned how making small changes, like replacing fizzy drinks with fresh juices or choosing home-cooked meals over fast food, can improve their health.
2. The Importance of Green Vegetables
The facilitators emphasised the role of green vegetables in promoting good health. They explained that green vegetables are rich in:
- Vitamins and minerals, which strengthen immunity and prevent illnesses.
- Fibre, which aids digestion and maintains gut health.
- Antioxidants, which protect against various diseases.
To make the learning process fun, children were asked to name their favourite green vegetables and share how they include them in their meals.
3. Making Healthier Choices Every Day
The session included a practical discussion on how to incorporate healthy eating habits into daily life. The facilitators encouraged children to:
- Start their day with a nutritious breakfast to stay energised.
- Drink plenty of water instead of sugary beverages.
- Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day.
- Limit the intake of processed and packaged foods.
Children’s Enthusiastic Participation
The session was highly interactive, with children engaging in discussions, asking questions, and sharing their own experiences with food. The use of animated videos, real-life examples, and practical tips made the learning process enjoyable and relatable for them.
Throughout the session, children expressed curiosity and excitement, especially during discussions about their favourite healthy foods. Some children even shared that they would encourage their families to adopt healthier eating habits at home.
Impact and Takeaways
By the end of the session, the children had gained a better understanding of the significance of healthy eating and the risks associated with junk food. They also learned practical ways to improve their daily diets.
The facilitators provided take-home messages encouraging children to:
- Be mindful of what they eat and make nutritious choices.
- Educate their friends and family about the importance of healthy eating.
- Avoid unhealthy snacks and opt for fresh, natural foods.
