On 14 February 2025, YUVA India, in collaboration with Auxilium Skill Academy, took a meaningful step towards child safety by conducting an awareness session on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Held at the Auxilium School Campus, Mazzarello Youth Centre, Balaram Babu Marg, Wadala (W), Mumbai, the session was attended by 20 children and two staff members. Leading this impactful session were Ms Vanita Salunke and Mr Vijay Powar from YUVA India, who dedicated their time and expertise to educating young minds on this crucial subject.
The Importance of POCSO Awareness
The POCSO Act, enacted in 2012, stands as a vital legal framework designed to safeguard children under 18 from sexual offences. With stringent punishments for perpetrators and child-friendly procedures in place, the law is a beacon of hope for vulnerable children. Understanding its provisions and implications is essential, making such awareness sessions an invaluable initiative.
Ms Vanita Salunke commenced the session with warmth and sensitivity, setting a reassuring tone that encouraged children to engage with the topic. She recognised the gravity of the subject and presented it in a way that was both informative and age-appropriate, ensuring a safe learning environment.
Creating a Safe Learning Environment
Given the sensitive nature of the discussion, it was essential to foster an atmosphere of trust and comfort. The children listened attentively, realising the significance of the information being shared. The session covered key aspects of the POCSO Act in a clear and structured manner:
- Types of Sexual Offences: The children were educated on different forms of sexual abuse, including penetrative and non-penetrative assault, aggravated assault, and harassment.
- Legal Safeguards and Consequences: The session detailed the strict punishments prescribed under the Act to deter offenders, highlighting the increased penalties for those in positions of authority.
- How to Report Abuse: One of the most crucial takeaways was the process of reporting abuse. The children were introduced to emergency helpline numbers such as 1098 (Childline) and 100 (Police). They were also made aware of the role of the Child Welfare Committee and Special POCSO Courts.
- Confidentiality and Child-Friendly Procedures: A key focus was on the protection of victims’ identities and ensuring that they receive support in a safe and dignified manner.
Empowering Young Minds with Knowledge
The interactive nature of the session allowed the children to participate in discussions, ask questions, and understand real-life scenarios. Through thought-provoking conversations and role-playing activities, they learnt how to identify unsafe situations and how to seek help without fear.
Both Ms Vanita and Mr Vijay emphasised the importance of self-awareness and personal safety. The children were encouraged to trust their instincts and always speak up if they felt uncomfortable or threatened. By instilling this confidence, the session aimed to empower them with the knowledge and courage to protect themselves and others.
The Emotional Impact of the Session
It was evident from the children’s reactions that the session left a lasting impression. They listened with utmost seriousness, absorbing the gravity of the topic. Some even shared their thoughts and experiences, highlighting how important it is to have open discussions about child safety.
The presence of two dedicated staff members from Auxilium Skill Academy further reinforced the importance of a strong support system. Teachers and caregivers play a crucial role in identifying warning signs and ensuring that children receive the necessary help and guidance.
YUVA India’s Commitment to Child Protection
YUVA India remains deeply committed to child safety and protection. By conducting sessions like these, the organisation is not only spreading awareness but also fostering a culture where children feel safe, heard, and supported. Protecting children from harm is a collective responsibility, and awareness is the first step towards achieving that goal.
Through partnerships with institutions like Auxilium Skill Academy, YUVA India is ensuring that more children, educators, and parents are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to combat child abuse.
Looking Ahead: A Collective Commitment
As the session drew to a close, the children expressed their gratitude, with many pledging to share what they had learnt with their peers. The staff members recognised the need for continued efforts in creating awareness and called for more such initiatives to be implemented regularly.
YUVA India envisions a future where every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment. The organisation will continue to advocate for child protection through education, awareness, and intervention.
The POCSO Act awareness session at Auxilium Skill Academy was more than just an educational event—it was a step towards empowering children, creating safe spaces, and reinforcing society’s collective responsibility to protect its most vulnerable members. By equipping young minds with the right knowledge, YUVA India is fostering a future where children can live fearlessly, with the confidence that their rights will always be safeguarded.
