A child’s innocence is best reflected in their smile, and ensuring their health and well-being is our collective responsibility. On 6th February 2025, YUVA India, in collaboration with Janvi Charitable Trust, Chandivali, Saki Naka, Mumbai, conducted a heartwarming and impactful awareness session on personal hygiene for children aged 6 to 12 years. More than just an educational initiative, this session was a moment of connection, nurturing young minds and hearts towards a healthier future.
The event welcomed 23 bright-eyed children, each with an eagerness to learn and engage. From YUVA India, Ms. Vanita Salunke and Mr. Vijay Powar were present, while Mr. Ashley Pereira, Manager of Janvi Charitable Trust, along with two centre in-charges, represented the host organisation. Ms. Vanita, with a warm and patient approach, conducted the session, transforming a routine discussion on hygiene into an inspiring and interactive experience.
Engaging the Children in Learning About Hygiene
The children, with their innocent charm and boundless curiosity, actively participated in the session. When asked about personal hygiene, their little voices eagerly listed habits such as cleaning their hair, body, and teeth. It was heartening to witness their awareness and enthusiasm, reaffirming the importance of nurturing good habits from a young age.
Ms. Vanita beautifully explained why personal hygiene is essential, not just for physical well-being but also for self-respect and confidence. To make the session even more relatable, a short, engaging video was shown, sparking giggles and wide-eyed wonder as the children absorbed the message through visuals. Following the video, key hygiene habits were discussed with great care and encouragement:
1. Bathing Habits
- A daily bath refreshes the body and cleanses away dirt, ensuring comfort and health.
- Using soap and clean water removes germs and keeps the skin healthy.
- Washing hair at least twice a week prevents scalp infections and maintains cleanliness.
2. Handwashing Practices
- Washing hands before meals and after using the toilet keeps illnesses at bay.
- Soap and clean water should always be used to remove unseen germs.
- A simple habit, yet a powerful shield against infections.
3. Dental Hygiene
- A child’s smile is precious – brushing teeth twice a day (morning and night) protects it.
- Cleaning the tongue ensures fresh breath and prevents bacteria buildup.
- Rinsing the mouth after eating sweets keeps cavities at bay.
4. Hair Care
- Clean hair not only looks neat but also feels good.
- Combing hair daily prevents tangles and keeps it free of dust and lice.
- Girls with long hair should keep it tied to maintain hygiene and prevent discomfort.
5. Nail Hygiene
- Small hands do great things – keeping nails trimmed and clean prevents infections.
- Dirt under nails harbours germs; a simple wash makes a difference.
6. Wearing Clean Clothes
- Fresh clothes make one feel good, boost confidence, and maintain hygiene.
- Sweaty clothes should be changed immediately to prevent body odour and discomfort.
- Clean shoes and socks help in keeping feet healthy and infection-free.

8. Sneezing and Coughing Etiquette
- Covering the mouth with a handkerchief or elbow while sneezing or coughing prevents germ spread.
- Used tissues should be properly disposed of to keep surroundings clean.
9. Drinking Clean Water
- Safe water is life – consuming boiled or filtered water prevents diseases.
- Avoiding uncovered or contaminated water protects against illness.
10. Maintaining Overall Health
- A nutritious diet ensures strength and immunity.
- Playing and exercising keep the body active and the mind happy.
- Adequate rest and sleep rejuvenate the body for a fresh start each day.
The Emotional Impact of the Session
Throughout the session, the children’s bright eyes shone with curiosity and understanding. Some hesitated at first, shyly whispering answers, but as encouragement grew, so did their confidence. Seeing their tiny hands raised enthusiastically, eager to answer and learn, was a sight that warmed hearts.
One little girl, barely eight years old, shared how she helps her younger sibling wash hands before meals, proving that even the smallest hands can make a difference. Another boy proudly recounted how he reminds his friends to brush their teeth at night. These simple, yet profound moments reaffirmed that education extends beyond words—it inspires action and nurtures responsibility.
By the end of the session, the children joyfully pledged to adopt personal hygiene habits and share their learning with family and friends. YUVA India and Janvi Charitable Trust believe that instilling such habits at a young age can significantly impact an individual’s long-term health and well-being.
Conclusion: A Step Towards a Brighter Tomorrow
This personal hygiene awareness session by YUVA India in collaboration with Janvi Charitable Trust was not just about teaching hygiene; it was about instilling confidence, self-care, and a sense of responsibility in these young hearts. Through engaging discussions, laughter-filled moments, and hands-on learning, the children embraced hygiene as a positive, life-enhancing habit.
Each child left the session with more than just knowledge—they left with a sense of empowerment. These young souls are not just the future; they are the present, and by nurturing their well-being today, we pave the way for a healthier, brighter tomorrow.
As we reflect on this beautiful day, we are reminded that change begins with a single step—or in this case, a single wash, a single brush, a single good habit. Let us all do our part in ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow up healthy, happy, and full of dreams.
By prioritising personal hygiene today, we create a world of healthier smiles and brighter futures tomorrow.
