On 1st March 2025, YUVA India conducted an educational session on personal hygiene at SUPPORT NGO, an organisation dedicated to providing shelter and care for vulnerable children. The session, led by Ms Vanita Salunke and Mr Vijay Powar from YUVA India, was attended by 31 children aged 8 to 18. Additionally, two medical team staff, one attendant, and two shelter home staff members from SUPPORT NGO participated, ensuring a supportive and interactive learning environment.

Instilling Essential Hygiene Practices

Personal hygiene is fundamental to maintaining good health, preventing illnesses, and boosting self-confidence. For children in shelter homes, adopting consistent hygiene practices can significantly enhance their well-being and self-esteem. Understanding this, YUVA India designed an engaging session that combined theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations, making it easier for the children to integrate these habits into their daily routines.

From the beginning, the children displayed enthusiasm and curiosity, eager to learn, share their thoughts, and participate actively. The interactive nature of the session encouraged them to openly discuss their concerns and experiences related to hygiene.

Practical Demonstrations for Daily Well-Being

The session covered essential hygiene topics, including:

  • Correct handwashing techniques to prevent the spread of diseases
  • Importance of brushing teeth twice a day and maintaining oral hygiene
  • Daily bathing and skincare routines
  • Wearing clean clothes and maintaining personal cleanliness
  • Keeping their living spaces neat and hygienic

Ms Vanita Salunke explained the importance of hygiene in simple, relatable terms, highlighting how small, consistent habits can prevent health issues. Mr Vijay Powar reinforced these teachings with practical demonstrations, ensuring the children could apply what they learned.

One of the session’s most engaging activities was a hands-on handwashing exercise. The children eagerly followed the demonstrated steps, realising how such a simple yet crucial practice helps in preventing infections. This activity left a lasting impression, reinforcing the necessity of maintaining cleanliness.

Empowering Children Through Knowledge

Many children shared their challenges in maintaining hygiene due to a lack of awareness or resources. The session reassured them that personal hygiene is not about expensive products but about adopting simple, everyday practices that contribute to a healthier life.

One boy admitted that he often neglected brushing his teeth but, after learning about the consequences of poor oral hygiene, committed to changing his habits. Others raised questions about body odour, hair care, and the importance of maintaining a clean environment. The session provided them with practical guidance, boosting their confidence and understanding.

A Supportive Environment for Lasting Change

The participation of SUPPORT NGO’s staff and medical team was instrumental in ensuring the session’s effectiveness. Their engagement reinforced the importance of hygiene and provided additional medical insights.

The shelter home staff, who interact with the children daily, pledged to continue encouraging and monitoring their hygiene routines, ensuring sustained behavioural change. This collaborative effort between YUVA India and SUPPORT NGO demonstrated the power of collective action in fostering long-term improvements in children’s well-being.

Shaping a Healthier Future

As the session concluded, the children expressed gratitude and excitement about implementing their newly learned hygiene practices. Many even committed to sharing their knowledge with peers, creating a ripple effect of awareness and positive change.

Ms Vanita Salunke and Mr Vijay Powar were deeply moved by the children’s eagerness to learn and improve their hygiene habits. Witnessing their enthusiasm reinforced YUVA India’s commitment to empowering children through education and awareness.

One of the key takeaways from the session was that small hygiene improvements can lead to significant long-term benefits. By embracing these habits, children not only enhance their health but also gain confidence and self-respect.
