On 4th March 2025, Jeevan Dhara, Indira Nagar, Cotton Green, Mumbai, hosted a special session to commemorate World Wildlife Day, with active participation from YUVA India. The event aimed to spread awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and instil in the younger generation the need to protect the environment.

The session was conducted by Ms Vanita Salunke, Project Officer from YUVA India, with support from Ms Priti Yadav, Teacher from Jeevan Dhara, and Mr Vijay Powar, Project Officer from YUVA India. Together, they guided the children through an interactive and informative discussion on why wildlife conservation is crucial for the planet and how simple everyday actions can contribute to preserving biodiversity.

Understanding the Significance of World Wildlife Day

World Wildlife Day, celebrated annually on 3rd March, highlights the need to protect wild animals and plants. This year’s theme, Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation, focused on the importance of collaboration among governments, organisations, and individuals to ensure a safer future for endangered species. The session encouraged children to become responsible stewards of nature and develop sustainable habits that benefit both wildlife and the environment.

Ms Vanita Salunke began the session by explaining the history of World Wildlife Day and why it is essential to dedicate a day to wildlife conservation. She shared examples of different species that have become endangered due to human activities and climate change, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.

The Importance of Saving Our Planet and Wildlife

Ms Vanita Salunke emphasised that every species, whether large or small, plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. She explained how deforestation, pollution, and climate change are major threats to wildlife, leading to habitat destruction and the extinction of species. She urged children to think about the world they want to live in and how they can contribute towards a greener, healthier planet.

Mr Vijay Powar further discussed how protecting wildlife means protecting humanity itself. Many species, including bees, birds, and marine life, help sustain ecosystems by pollinating plants, controlling pests, and maintaining soil health. If these species disappear, it will directly impact human survival. The session made it clear that saving wildlife is not just about animals; it is about saving life on Earth.

Engaging the New Generation Developing Habits for a Sustainable Future

Ms Priti Yadav engaged the children in an interactive discussion on how small daily actions can contribute to protecting wildlife and the environment. She encouraged them to adopt simple yet impactful habits such as:

  • Reducing Plastic Use: Plastic waste harms marine life and other animals. Carrying reusable bags and bottles can significantly reduce plastic pollution.
  • Planting Trees: Trees provide oxygen, shelter for animals, and help combat climate change. Even planting a small sapling can make a difference.
  • Saving Water and Energy: Turning off taps, lights, and electronics when not in use conserves resources and reduces environmental harm.
  • Avoiding Harmful Products: Many beauty and household products contain ingredients that contribute to deforestation. Choosing sustainable options helps protect wildlife.
  • Spreading Awareness: Talking to family and friends about the importance of conservation inspires more people to take action.

She also explained how human actions, such as the overuse of pesticides and deforestation, contribute to the loss of biodiversity. She encouraged children to be mindful of their habits and make conscious efforts to live in harmony with nature.

Interactive Activities and Learning Through Fun

To make the session more engaging, the children participated in storytelling, quizzes, and artwork competitions focused on wildlife. Many of them drew pictures of their favourite endangered animals and shared ideas on how they could protect them. The enthusiasm displayed by the children was heartwarming, showing that they truly understood the significance of the day.

A short video showcasing different endangered species, their habitats, and conservation efforts worldwide was also screened. Additionally, a documentary related to wildlife was shown to the children, which they found highly engaging and enjoyable. The documentary highlighted success stories of wildlife conservation efforts, inspiring the children to take small yet meaningful actions to protect nature. It helped them visualise the beauty of nature and the urgency of conservation efforts.

Ms Vanita Salunke also led a storytelling session where she shared real-life examples of conservation efforts worldwide. She narrated the inspiring stories of individuals and communities who have dedicated their lives to saving endangered species.

A Call to Action The Role of Individuals in Protecting Wildlife

Towards the end of the session, the speakers reinforced the message that every individual has a role to play in saving the environment. Children were encouraged to be the Guardians of Wildlife by making small changes in their daily lives. A pledge was taken where they promised to:

  • Protect nature and wildlife.
  • Reduce waste and pollution.
  • Learn more about animals and their habitats.
  • Encourage others to care for the environment.

This initiative was not just about educating young minds but also about inspiring them to take action. The impact of such sessions is long-lasting, as the new generation will carry these values forward, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all living beings.

Conclusion Moving Towards a Sustainable Future

The World Wildlife Day session at Jeevan Dhara, Indira Nagar, Cotton Green, was a successful and enlightening event. The collaborative efforts of Jeevan Dhara and YUVA India helped raise awareness about wildlife conservation and inspired children to develop eco-friendly habits in their day-to-day lives.

As we move forward, it is essential to continue spreading awareness and taking meaningful actions to protect our planet. The message from the session was clear: Every small effort counts, and together we can create a world where humans and wildlife coexist harmoniously.

Let us remember that protecting wildlife is not just an option; it is a necessity for the survival of future generations. The efforts we make today will determine the future of our planet and its inhabitants.
