YUVA was honoured to participate in the World Environment Day 2025 celebrations, hosted by the organisation Action Against Global Warming Mauritius, under this year’s global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event brought together environmental leaders, students, officials, and community organisations, all unified by a shared mission to fight plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices.

The event commenced at around 09:30 AM with a symbolic mini tree-planting ceremony, reinforcing the importance of environmental action at the grassroots level. This was followed by the official opening speech by Shrishtee, who welcomed guests and set the tone for a day of environmental advocacy and celebration.

The President of Action Against Global Warming Mauritius, Dr. Narad Dawoodarry, delivered a powerful speech highlighting the urgency of the global plastic crisis. “300 million tons of plastic are produced annually, but only a fraction is recycled,” he stated, urging all stakeholders to take decisive action to curb plastic waste and promote recycling initiatives.

Next, Mr. Sheikh Dreepaul, Sustainability Manager of Tribecca Mall, shared insights into the mall’s commitment to eco-friendly operations. He explained how Tribecca has adopted green energy solutions as part of its mission to become a more sustainable commercial space.

Dr. Ganapatee Armoogum then spoke passionately about the mangrove restoration projects taking place in Mauritius and Seychelles. His address highlighted the critical role of mangroves in protecting biodiversity, combating climate change, and supporting coastal communities.

The event was further elevated by the presence of His Excellency Mr. Jean Yvan Robert Hungley, Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius. He delivered remarks on the significance of World Environment Day and praised the collective efforts of youth, civil society, and institutions in fostering environmental consciousness.

A joyful highlight of the celebration was the award ceremony for the winners of the painting competition, which was held at Tribecca Mall on 22 May 2025. The creative artworks showcased young people’s vision for a plastic-free planet, inspiring hope for the future.

To conclude the formal segment, pins and certificates were presented to the chief guests as a symbolic gesture of their commitment to protecting the environment.

The event wrapped up with a friendly networking session over light refreshments, allowing participants to connect and exchange ideas for future environmental initiatives.

World Environment Day 2025 at Tribecca Mall was a resounding success, serving as a strong reminder that collective action — from government leaders to students — is vital in the global fight to beat plastic pollution. YUVA is proud to stand alongside partners in promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable development across Mauritius.
