Today we are leaving in an era where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. According to the world statistics report, over three billions people live less than $2.50 a day and at least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. Moreover, more than 80% of the world population lives in countries where income differentials are widening. Continue reading “Divesh Gokool: Poverty at Large in Mauritius”
Poojha Bissoon: Between Hope and Disillusion at Longère Tole
3 years ago, I won the first prize in a national competition on ‘how human rights affect my everyday life’. Sachin Bhagirath: My Experience of Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole
Basically, it is said that life in a village is not as fast as it in the city. It is most peaceful, calm and quiet. Today, being a volunteer of the social group YUVA, I have got the opportunity to visit a village at Tombeau Bay, in the west part of Mauritius.
Despite being a Mauritian, it is the first time that I have seen the other facet of the society where people are living below the poverty line. This experience shocked me and really touched my heart. It is said that a human has several needs to satisfy and one of the basic human need is clothes. Continue reading “Sachin Bhagirath: My Experience of Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole”
Chelvin Ramsamy: My Experience of Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole
On 10 December 2017, YUVA proceeded with the distribution of clothes to around 68 families at Longere Toler/Blanc, Baie du Tombeau. Although we are in 2017, I came to realise that there are still people who are living in deplorable conditions in our paradise island.
Along with Mrs Veronique who works for YUVA Baie du Tombeau, we, YUVANs, went door-to-door to meet these families and distribute clothes to them. Each and every home in Longere Tole is extremely small and crowded. As I was distributing the clothes around, I had the opportunity to peek into the houses and saw some tiny rooms with up to six people living inside. Manai Gatil: Clothes Distribution to 68 Vulnerable Families of Longère Tole
“In order to achieve improved outcomes for families at risk, a paradigm shift is required so that unequal outcomes for families and children are seen as social injustices, rather than as products of individual dysfunction or deficit” – Philip Slee
YUVA, an NGO headed by Mr. Krishna Athal, organised a social event at Longère Tole, Baie Du Tombeau, being one of the disadvantaged regions in Mauritius, on the 10th December 2017. Bakang Joseph: My Personal Reflection on Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole
The mere sight of one who lacks; one who struggles to attain basic human survival necessities that most perceive as insignificant, is indeed for the strong at heart. After taking part in voluntary donation activities over the years in different parts of my home country, Botswana, I had assumed my visit to Longere Tole, Baie Du Tombeau with the YUVA team would be one like any other. My desire to sign up as a delegate for the 2017 Global Social Leader Forum was sparked by standing a chance to see and experience living conditions of Mauritian disadvantaged communities; but never for a second had I imagined the dire living conditions some of the locals are forced to endure, day in-day out. Merile Baboojeelall: My Experience of Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole
I’m Merile Baboojeelall and I’m a student. Actually, I’m doing my diploma in Events Management at Rushmore Business School. It was a new experience to see the condition of living of these people in Mauritius itself. In fact, I’m a Mauritian and can see how nowadays Government can hide those part of Mauritius to people. As the brand name of Mauritius is Mauritius is a pleasure but unfortunately, not everyone knows that this country has two aspects: the positive and the negative. Nida Jawad: The Dark Side of the Longère Tole Story
“Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius”- Mark Twain.
What comes to your mind when we talk about Mauritius- a long relaxing holiday on the famous white sand beaches, hiking, rock climbing and mind-boggling water activities for everyone? Same feelings were in my mind when I was packing my stuff to attend a Social Leader Forum in Port Louis the capital of the country whose stories of multi-religion, multi-culture and multi-language always fantasized me- High rank of democracy, economic rate and political freedom has always been the tales about the island by the number of websites on the internet which put me in a doubt when I personally went and observed. Kirti Sheonarain: My Experience of Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole
The scorching sun, the muddy ground and the rusty iron sheets ensured that I was fully conscious and felt every single step that I was taking while walking through that side of Mauritius that has been censored out from the postcards, for years now. We were smiling, but so were they. Except the fact that, they knew how to smile with the least they had, and we are always looking for “more”. Rana Muhammad Ali: Spreading Happiness and Hope at Longère Tole
Today we went to a place not even known by most of the residents living in Mauritius. We met the people who are living below poverty line. In Mauritius to imagine that such place exist was shocking. Being a tourist I was thinking and as according to my search on Mauritius I have not seen anything or any website mentioning these areas. Maybe my search was not focused on these areas as its Image was shown to the world that it is a perfect Holiday destination and yes it is, but this side of this beautiful holiday destination was altogether invisible.
