Maha Shivaratri in Mauritius: The Great Night of Shiva

Maha Shivaratri, which translates to the “Great Night of Lord Shiva”, is Mauritius’ most popular Hindu festival. YUVA volunteers serve hundreds of thousands of pilgrims of Maha Shivaratri in Mauritius every year.

According to the Hindu calendar, Maha Shivaratri is observed yearly; on the thirteenth night and fourteenth day of the eleventh Hindu month of Phalguna or Maagh (February – March). Devotees of Lord Shiva converge by thousands with great enthusiasm and reverence to Ganga Talao – the Sacred Lake.

YUVA volunteers, YUVA Academy students host lunch at senior citizens’ home

YUVA volunteers and YUVA Academy students organised a visit to the senior citizens’ home, Saint Jean de Dieu – Hospice & Chapel, Pamplemousses, on Sunday.

YUVA served lunch to around 100 residents of the home. We served 7 curries and rice, rason, panacon, juice and Aplon and Sagoo for lunch. YUVANs had set up the dining room, served food, fed those senior citizens who could not eat by themselves and cleaned up the place afterwards. We also organised different games, talked to the senior citizens and listened to their stories, each one as interesting as the last. We had put on music and those who felt like it danced and entertained the others. There was also an open mike session, whereby senior citizens, staff members and volunteers took the opportunity to amaze us with great songs.

Our young people were so excited that they presented handmade cards, sweets and other gifts to senior citizens. YUVANs also shared their stories with them. In return, senior citizens showered their blessings and enjoyed a lot in the company of our volunteers and students. YUVA Sustainable Development Goals: Mauritius Youth Parliament, Session 4

YUVA is organising a forum on the “Sustainable Development Goals – 12 Goals to Transform Mauritius” with YUVANs, secondary school students, university students, government officials, NGO representatives and personalities from the corporate sector as participants.

In this context, YUVA invites you and officials of your organisation as participants on Friday 26 February 2016, from 09:00hr to noon at Municipality of Port Louis.

As YUVA notes, this year is a time for national action. From January 2016, YUVA adopts 12 Sustainable Development Goals to achieve extraordinary things in the next 10 years: end poverty, promote prosperity and well-being for all, and protect the island. These Sustainable Development Goals set a course to achieve these objectives – for people everywhere. This is a time to feel hopeful, not hopeless, about our national future.

This is an era of historic opportunity. We can be the first youth generation to end extreme poverty, the most determined youth generation in history to end injustice and inequality, and the last youth generation to be threatened by climate change. With the adoption of a new development agenda and sustainable development goals, we can set Mauritius on course for a better future. The Goals serve as YUVANs’ to-do list from January 2016 to December 2025. The Goals and targets will stimulate action over the next 10 years in areas of critical importance for Mauritius.

We rely on your collaboration and shall be pleased to have your presence for the Mauritius Youth Parliament‘s session 4.

Clothes Distribution to 50 Children in Baie Du Tombeau

In line with its anti-poverty mission, YUVA Baie du Tombeau, in collaboration of YUVA District of Pamplemousses, proceeded with the distribution of clothes to 50 children between 4 to 12 years old, who attended a “Talk on Behaviour and Road Safety Issues”, organised by the Mauritius Police Force at the Youth Centre Cite Florida at Baie du Tombeau.

While the United Nations’ (UN) Universal Children’s Day, which was established in 1954, promotes international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide and which also works towards improving children’s welfare, there still are children that are nearly forgotten and who are living in deplorable conditions.

YUVA came forward and went door-to-door to meet these children and their families and distribute clothes. Even YUVAN who participated in this initiative can never forget the smiles of those children while they had the clothes in their hands. A simple gesture made a big impact.
