Basically, it is said that life in a village is not as fast as it in the city. It is most peaceful, calm and quiet. Today, being a volunteer of the social group YUVA, I have got the opportunity to visit a village at Tombeau Bay, in the west part of Mauritius.
Despite being a Mauritian, it is the first time that I have seen the other facet of the society where people are living below the poverty line. This experience shocked me and really touched my heart. Chelvin Ramsamy: My Experience of Clothes Distribution at Longère Tole
On 10 December 2017, YUVA proceeded with the distribution of clothes to around 68 families at Longere Toler/Blanc, Baie du Tombeau. Although we are in 2017, I came to realise that there are still people who are living in deplorable conditions in our paradise island.
Along with Mrs Veronique who works for YUVA Baie du Tombeau, we, YUVANs, went door-to-door to meet these families and distribute clothes to them. Each and every home in Longere Tole is extremely small and crowded. As I was distributing the clothes around, I had the opportunity to peek into the houses and saw some tiny rooms with up to six people living inside. YUVA, an NGO headed by Mr. Krishna Athal, organised a social event at Longère Tole, Baie Du Tombeau, being one of the disadvantaged regions in Mauritius, on the 10th December 2017. The activity consisted mainly to distribute collected clothes to families in need, and to have an overview of the state and way of living of the individuals over there. The mere sight of one who lacks; one who struggles to attain basic human survival necessities that most perceive as insignificant, is indeed for the strong at heart. After taking part in voluntary donation activities over the years in different parts of my home country, Botswana, I had assumed my visit to Longere Tole, Baie Du Tombeau with the YUVA team would be one like any other. My desire to sign up as a delegate for the 2017 Global Social Leader Forum was sparked by standing a chance to see and experience living conditions of Mauritian disadvantaged communities; but never for a second had I imagined the dire living conditions some of the locals are forced to endure, day in-day out.
