YUVA is looking for Board Members, on a voluntary basis, to form a team in Mumbai and drive its vision and mission. Everything we do at YUVA has just one goal: the sustained well-being of children and young people, especially the most vulnerable. We work with families, communities, and partners to ensure that children and young people enjoy good health, are educated for life, experience the love of parents and their surroundings, and are cared for, protected, and participating. More importantly, we serve all children and young people — regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.

1. Duty of Care

Being a board member is more than a résumé builder. Members should be committed to following through on promises and assisting the organisation to its best abilities. This means:

• Attending meetings and actively participating in committees
• Communicating with the executive director and other board members
• Following through on assignments
• Supporting program initiatives

2. Duty of Loyalty

Board members should do more than show up. They should fully support our work, embody our organisation’s mission, and be loyal ambassadors for our cause. When acting on behalf of the organisation, each board member must put aside their personal and professional interests.

All activities and decisions should be in the organisation’s best interest, not in the best interest of the individual board member.

Those who successfully fulfil this duty proactively mingle with volunteers, visit the organisation’s facilities, and participate in community initiatives. These individuals fully embrace our mission, not just board service.

3. Duty of Obedience

One of the more subtle board member duties is obedience. The board should do everything to reach organisational goals, but members still should follow the organisation’s guidelines. These are found in our governance documents, and every board member has a legal responsibility to understand them.

A board that strays from our governance rules could steer the organisation in the wrong direction or even impact our reputation and standing in the community.
