In the world of robotics and STEM enthusiasts, there exists a breed of young talent whose passion for innovation knows no bounds. Among them is Jaanya Callychurn, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student from Droopnath Ramphul State College in Mauritius.

With a fervent interest in subjects like Maths, Physics, and Computer Science, Jaanya embodies the spirit of curiosity and innovation that defines the future of science and technology. In this article, she shares her remarkable journey and the excitement that comes with representing her nation at FIRST Global 2023.

“I feel greatly privileged to be part of such a life-changing experience – FIRST Global 2023,” Jaanya remarked with enthusiasm. “Representing the National Team is a very proud moment for me – the dream of thousands of youngsters.  I have the opportunity to represent my beloved Mauritius, and it is a highly prestigious moment for me and my family, too,” she added.

Jaanya’s fascination with robotics began at an early age. Indeed, she explained, “My passion for robotics traces its roots back to my childhood. I have always been captivated by robots and the mechanical intricacies they offer. I would dismantle and try to reassemble old gadgets in my free time, eager to understand the mechanics and how they function.”

The pivotal turning point came when Jaanya became part of YUVA. Indeed, she proudly stated, “YUVA allowed me to turn my passion into practice, and I feel driven by the same wonder and enthusiasm that sparked my journey as a child.”

FIRST Global 2023 is an international robotics competition that brings together the brightest high-school students in the field of robotics from all over the world, aiming to empower them through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

The competition fosters cross-cultural communication, cooperation, and problem-solving skills, empowering students to collectively tackle global challenges and come up with innovative solutions.

Ever since she earned her place on Team Mauritius, Jaanya and her teammates have dedicated themselves to preparing for the competition. However, when asked about the challenges faced along the way, she sincerely shared her insights, “In any project, the outcome depends on the collective team’s effort. Having a great team significantly increases the chances of success. Nonetheless, building and nurturing a great team can be challenging. Indeed, it is inevitable that personalities and ideas may clash, and individual performances may vary. Thankfully, our mentors were fundamental in keeping a good equilibrium, fostering unity and a great team spirit.”

As FIRST Global 2023 approaches, Jaanya is enthusiastic to participate and work with her teammates, all with the aim of achieving outstanding results at the competition. When asked about her aspirations for the future, Jaanya articulated her vision, “My driving aspiration is simple yet profound- to make the world a better place through the development of life-changing prosthetics.”

Jaanya passionately added, “My dream is to experience a future where robots significantly impact the industrial and medical sectors alongside humans.”

Jaanya’s dream is, thus, centred around the idea of a future where robots play a significant role alongside humans in the industrial and medical sectors. Her dream envisions a world where robots are not just tools but active contributors to various industries and healthcare, working in collaboration with humans to improve efficiency, productivity, and the overall quality of life.

In her concluding remarks, Jaanya shared an inspiring message to her peers: “Within FIRST Global 2023, every individual has a meaningful role focused on celebrating the human spirit and its capabilities. Whether you win or lose does not matter; what truly counts is what you take back from this experience – memories and emotions. Thus, everyone getting a chance to participate in such a prestigious competition should pursue their dreams.”

We wish the very best of luck to Jaanya and the entire team. May your hard work and dedication lead to great success in FIRST Global 2023 and beyond. Go Team Mauritius!
