For an NGO to truly make a difference, it must function according to best practices and constantly remain vigilant against common mistakes. Every nation has its own unique set of circumstances that can lead NGOs astray. Still, in Mauritius, there are six sins which should be especially avoided if organisations wish to see positive change: inadequate consultation with local populations, reliance on external stakeholders without proper accounting systems, lack of detailed project plans and budgets, failure to adhere fully to donor requirements or regulations; poor communication strategies with authorities or between members of the organisation itself; and overlooking financial management guidelines.

YUVA signs MoU with Pakistan’s youth-led organisation MAPS to fight social injustice

On Tuesday, 27 August 2019, YUVA was made an official partner of the Global Peace Chain (GPC) project, launched by the Mentor Amiable Professional Society (MAPS).

MAPS is an organisation established in 2012, headquartered in Pakistan and working in the sectors of Human Rights, Education, Community Welfare, Women and Youth Empowerment, UN SDGs, especially on peace promotion and transgender rehabilitation projects.

YUVA Academy admitted to Civic Education Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (CENESA) by Interim Steering Committee in Kenya

YUVA is thrilled to announce that YUVA Academy has been admitted to the Civic Education Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (CENESA) by the Interim Steering Committee seating on the 31st of July 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Resolution to set up CENESA was adopted at the Eastern African Civic Education Forum in Entebbe, Uganda. In the course of the Forum, it became evident that consistent connectivity between Eastern and Southern Africa was lacking. There was thus a need for a platform that enables civic education and youth empowerment organisations across the sub-continent connect, collaborate and cooperate with each other.

YUVA collaborates with Transphorm Professionals for Children Health CPD event at POWA

The Children Health CPD Event was held on Wednesday, 26 June 2019 at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium of the University of Mauritius. Organised by Transphorm Professionals Limited, the event aimed to provide a training session for the continuous professional development of Pharmacists in Mauritius.

YUVA was invited to significantly collaborate on the event in order for the audience to gain an insight into how best to incorporate the social aspect in the pharmaceutical and medical domains. Apart from pharmacists, participants also included doctors and other healthcare professionals.

YUVA met Elles C Nous to discuss areas of collaboration to help underprivileged children

Elles C Nous Association sought a meeting with YUVA in order to discuss potential areas where both organisations can work together. The meeting was held today at the office of the Elles C Nous Association. Elles C Nous Association was founded by Milene Abdoolkader, who is also the President of the association.

The target group of Elles C Nous Association is 85 children from 5 to 17 years old and 50 parents.  Elles C Nous Association is a community development association mainly active with children and their families in the region of Beau Bassin, Rose Hill and in the district of Plaines Wilhems in general.

YUVA participates in Climate Change Conference 2019 at African Leadership University (ALU)

The African Leadership University (ALU), in partnership with Ideas For Us (Mauritius), organised a climate change conference and symbolic tree planting exercise on Saturday, 1 June 2019 in commemoration of the World Environment Day, which is celebrated on 5 June. YUVA was invited to participate in the event.

The aim of this conference was to work on sustainable initiatives in order to counteract climate change and change the future. Ideas For Us joined hands with all its partners present at the conference to engage in a good cause. The organisation has also accepted the UN Plastic Challenge programme to beat plastic wastes in Mauritius.

YUVA and Smile Foundation explore collaboration on Setting-up of Social Entreprises

In an effort to connect and work with organisations operating in similar sectors, YUVA representatives met Mr Rajeev Sharma, the General Manager, Mr Mishra, the Co-Founder and Mr Dham, the Chief Operating Officer of Smile Foundation on Monday, 6 May 2019.

Smile Foundation is an NGO in India directly benefitting over 750,000 children and their families every year, through more than 350 live welfare projects on education, healthcare, livelihood and women empowerment, in over 1000 remote villages and slums across 25 states of India.

YUVA and IIT Delhi begin dialogue to explore potential areas of collaboration

In the afternoon of Monday, 6 May 2019, YUVA representatives were invited to meet Professor Sanjeev Sanghi, the Dean of Alumni Affairs and International programmes at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to explore different grounds for collaboration.

YUVA gave an overview of its initiatives in Mauritius and Africa, which was followed by a brief presentation from Dr Sanghi on IIT Delhi.

In an effort to initiate and further collaborative partnerships in India, a meeting took place between YUVA representatives and Mr Mathew Cherian, the CEO, as well as Ms Paromita Thomas, Country Head (HR) of HelpAge India on Monday, 6 May 2019.

HelpAge India is a leading charity in India working for the cause and care of disadvantaged older persons to improve their quality of life for nearly four decades. It aims to serve elder needs in a holistic manner, enabling them to live active, dignified and healthier lives.

iNTELLYJELLY produces power-packed monthly magazines for kids aged 4 to 12 years. iNTELLYJELLY believes that emphasis on Holistic Empowering Education is a need for every child in today’s world and is not intended to only complement school-based learning process but also endeavours to enhance Human Development Index/HDI.

Official Launching of Edycs ARADI Advocacy Group

In the context of the World Mental Health Day Celebration and the Promotion of the African Charter to the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities, held on the 10th of October, the Edycs Epilepsy Group organised the official launching of the Edycs ARADI Advocacy Group. YUVA, along with many other member organisations, were presented with membership awards, in the presence Mr Daniel Eric Clive Laurent, Lord Mayor of Port Louis; Mr Paramasiva Chengan, president of MACOSS; Mr Youssouf Noormamode, president of Edycs Epilepsy Group; and other NGOs at the Municipality of Port Louis.
